ORLANDO, Fla., November 4, 2011 — API Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:ATNY) (“API” or the “Company”), a provider of electronic systems, subsystems, RF, and secure systems for defense, aerospace, and commercial applications, announced today the availability of the new version of its award-winning Hawki™ Video Aiming Device for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) robots. In addition to displaying crosshairs and distance to the target on the operator’s video monitor, this new version, the Hawki Tilt™, also displays the tilt angle at which disruptor/barrel is aimed.
“Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams are trained to shoot at a certain angle with respect to an explosive device lying on the ground,” said Jeff Stangl, Engineering Manager, Systems and Subsystems Solutions Division, API Technologies. “This new feature on the Hawki Tilt comes directly from such a requirement. In addition to displaying the tilt angle on the monitor, the new Hawki Tilt has a re-engineered design to allow for the replacement of damaged video modules without additional calibration.”
The Hawki Tilt attaches to an EOD robot’s disruptor/shotgun barrel and utilizes a camera and rangefinder to automatically place crosshairs over the video signal. While approaching a target, the crosshairs adjust the aim point based on the range to the target in order to show the operator the true point of impact for their shot. No calibration is required and no adjustments are needed by the operator to account for the range to the target. The system also displays range to target and tilt angle on the video image to promote a more accurate shot regardless of distance from the explosive device. It is compatible with most EOD disruptors and shotguns -- including the PAN™ Disruptor and the Bennelli M4 Super 90 shotgun.
The original Hawki received a Gold 2011 Edison Award for Best New Product in the Locational Technologies Category.
